For smooth hair, choose a barrel you can control, usable lower heat and airflow settings, and attachments you will actually use. Compare the fixed oval Mermade Blow Dry Brush and Remington Hydraluxe AS8901AU with the interchangeable Remington Blow Dry & Style AS7700AU. BuyCheck has not hands-on tested any of these tools; this guide compares manufacturer specifications, not measured smoothing results.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare.
| Australian model | Barrel and attachments | Heat and airflow controls | Routine to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mermade Blow Dry Brush, Sleek Black | Fixed 60mm oval barrel; 400g listed weight | Three paired settings: 60°C, 95°C and 115°C | Simple fixed-brush routine; check fit around short layers |
| Remington Hydraluxe AS8901AU | Fixed oval barrel; diameter not stated in the source checked | 3 heat / 2 speed settings; cool shot; Hydracare setting | Fixed oval brush with listed heat/speed choices |
| Remington Blow Dry & Style AS7700AU | 50mm, 38mm and 25mm brushes; paddle brush; concentrator; Root Boost | 2 heat/speed settings; cool shot | Smaller heads or a pre-drying step; more parts to swap and store |
What makes a blow-dry brush easier to use for smooth hair
Start with handling: barrel size, grip, published weight, switch position and a swivel cord. You need to guide small sections without stretching your wrist or repeatedly catching the controls. A specification sheet cannot establish how comfortable a tool will feel in your hand.
For a smooth finish, follow the maker’s preparation and sectioning instructions and use manageable sections. Compare lower heat and airflow choices before maximum wattage. Ionic or ceramic claims do not prove a better finish or damage-free styling; BuyCheck has not measured those results.
Oval vs round barrels
An oval barrel offers a broad surface for smoothing with lift and curved ends. A smaller round barrel is worth comparing for fringes, short layers or more defined shaping. Shape and diameter are separate checks: an oval brush is not automatically smaller or easier to manoeuvre.
Mermade specifies a 60mm oval barrel; Hydraluxe specifies an oval barrel without a diameter in the source checked. The AS7700AU lists 50mm, 38mm and 25mm brush heads. Treat these as layout choices, not a performance ranking.
Fine/short hair vs thick/long hair needs
Fine hair and short hair are different considerations. For fine strands, prioritise a lower heat option and gentle handling; for short layers or a fringe, compare a smaller head that can reach the section you want to shape. Fine, long hair may still suit a larger barrel.
For thick or long hair, compare head size, grip and how you will divide the hair into sections. A concentrator can support a separate pre-drying step if the instructions allow it. Do not assume a higher wattage or larger barrel will dry thick hair faster: we have not tested drying time.
Heat and airflow controls
Check whether heat and airflow can be adjusted separately or only through paired settings. Count the usable combinations rather than assuming that three settings provide independent controls. A cool shot is a control feature, not a removable attachment.
Mermade publishes three paired heat/speed settings at 60°C, 95°C and 115°C. Hydraluxe lists three heat and two speed settings, a cool shot and a Hydracare lower-heat setting. AS7700AU lists two heat/speed settings and a cool shot. Follow each manual and start with the lowest useful heat for your hair.
Attachment bundles: cool shot, concentrators and diffusers
A fixed brush avoids swapping heads. An interchangeable bundle is useful when its smaller brushes, paddle brush or concentrator match steps you expect to use. Check that attachments lock securely, how they are removed after cooling, and what needs storing or cleaning.
AS7700AU lists three brush sizes, a paddle brush, a drying concentrator and Root Boost. Its published bundle does not list a diffuser. If preserving natural curls is part of your routine, verify diffuser inclusion and compatibility separately; do not assume every airstyler includes one. Neither fixed oval brush is an interchangeable attachment bundle.
Mermade Blow Dry Brush, Sleek Black: fixed oval layout
The manufacturer lists a 60mm oval barrel, 400g weight, three heat settings, a 1200W motor and 2.5m swivel cord. Its Australian listing states 220–240V, an AU plug and a two-year warranty.
Compare this layout for a simple fixed-brush routine. The broad barrel may be less convenient around short layers; that is a fit-based inference, not a result from hands-on testing. Follow the maker’s towel-dried-hair instructions.
Remington Hydraluxe AS8901AU: fixed oval controls
The Australian manufacturer source lists an oval barrel, 1200W, three heat settings, two speed settings, cool shot, swivel cord and a five-year warranty. Hydracare is described as a lower-heat setting.
Compare its controls with Mermade if you prefer a fixed oval brush. The source checked does not establish barrel diameter, handling weight or real-world smoothing performance; verify missing details on the exact model before buying.
Remington Blow Dry & Style AS7700AU: interchangeable heads
The maker lists 50mm mixed-bristle, 38mm retractable-bristle and 25mm mixed-bristle brushes, a paddle brush, concentrator and Root Boost. It also lists 1200W, two heat/speed settings, cool shot, a 3m swivel cord and a three-year warranty.
Compare this model if smaller heads or a separate pre-drying step matter to your routine. More attachments mean more parts to swap and store; attachment count does not prove easier use or a better finish.
What to verify before buying
Confirm the exact Australian model and bundle, barrel dimensions, heat/airflow combinations, included attachments, weight, grip and cord length. Read preparation, cleaning and cooling instructions. Check the ratings label and Australian plug rather than assuming an overseas listing is equivalent.
Verify seller, current availability, warranty, returns and total delivered cost. Under $150 is a shopping budget, not a guarantee that every listing or checkout total qualifies. We do not provide live prices, stock guarantees, test scores or endorsements.
Questions buyers ask
What makes a blow-dry brush easier to use for smooth hair?
Compare barrel size, grip, published weight, swivel cord and controls you can reach. Follow the maker’s sectioning instructions. BuyCheck has not hands-on tested these tools or measured smoothing performance.
Should I choose an oval or round barrel?
Compare a broad oval barrel for smoothing with lift and curved ends, and a smaller round head for fringes, shorter layers or shaping. Check diameter as well as shape; larger is not automatically easier.
What should fine or short hair need compared with thick or long hair?
For fine strands, compare lower heat options; for short layers, compare a smaller head. For thick or long hair, consider sectioning, grip and whether a pre-drying attachment fits your routine. Hair thickness and length are separate choices.
Are heat and airflow controls independent?
Not necessarily. Some settings pair heat and speed. Mermade publishes paired settings; Hydraluxe lists three heat and two speed settings, and AS7700AU lists two heat/speed settings. Read the exact model’s manual for usable combinations.
Do these bundles include a cool shot, concentrator or diffuser?
Hydraluxe and AS7700AU list a cool shot; this is a control, not an attachment. AS7700AU lists a concentrator but no diffuser. Verify the exact bundle and compatibility before buying a tool for a diffuser routine.
What should I verify before buying in Australia?
Check the exact model, AU plug and voltage, barrel dimensions, controls, attachments, warranty, seller and returns. Include delivery in your budget. The under-$150 heading is not a live price or stock guarantee.
Can I use a blow-dry brush on soaking-wet hair?
Follow the exact product manual. Mermade directs users to start with towel-dried hair and work in sections. Do not assume another model has identical preparation instructions.
