Protein powder: when it earns a place

Food first, then a convenient powder if it fits your needs and routine.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey – Vanilla 454g

For Adults 18+ · Sources checked 22 September 2026 · General education.

Start with the food you enjoy

Protein supports body tissues and repair, and both plant and animal foods provide it. Eggs, yoghurt, tofu, beans, fish and other familiar foods can be part of regular meals. Many Australians already get enough; needs vary with life stage and activity. A powder is a convenience option, not a requirement for being healthy.

Compare the label, not the tub

Check the actual protein in a serving, the ingredient list, allergens, serving size and the total number of servings. A larger scoop is not automatically more useful. Whey comes from milk; plant blends have their own ingredients and allergen warnings. Check the exact flavour and pack size before buying.

Keep the wider routine in view

Protein powder does not replace varied meals or a training plan. If you compete in sport, discuss supplement choice and contamination risk with a sports dietitian. An ingredient's evidence is not an endorsement of every product containing it. Avoid adding multiple powders just because a bundle promises more.
